Device Registry API Practice Site for API Testers

The 2025-02-22 update added a page for the Device Registry API, including setup notes and sample exercises.

The benefit of the update was not only adding another link to a practice site. Device Registry gives learners a compact API that includes CRUD operations, basic authentication, OpenAPI documentation, and Swagger UI. That combination makes it a useful step between a no-auth beginner API and a more complex application workflow.

Why Device Registry Is a Useful Practice API

The Device Registry API models a recognisable domain: devices exist, devices have data, and users expect to create, inspect, change, and remove those records. That makes it easier to design meaningful tests than it would be with a completely abstract sample API.

It is useful when you want to practise:

  • creating a device and reading it back,
  • changing a field and confirming the change persisted,
  • deleting a device and checking the follow-up response,
  • trying invalid data and checking validation,
  • comparing documented behaviour with actual behaviour.

Because the domain is small, the API is approachable. Because it includes auth and documentation, it still feels closer to real API testing than a purely open demo endpoint.

Basic Authentication Practice

Authentication changes the shape of testing. You need to check successful requests, missing credentials, incorrect credentials, and whether protected operations are blocked as expected.

Basic authentication is also useful for teaching because the mechanism is visible. Learners can see the Authorization header, understand that credentials are being sent with the request, and compare authenticated and unauthenticated responses.

That makes Device Registry a good next step after Simple API. Simple API lets you focus on request bodies, status codes, and state. Device Registry adds the question: should this caller be allowed to do this?

How OpenAPI Helps

OpenAPI documentation gives testers a map of endpoints, schemas, methods, and expected responses. Swagger UI can help you explore the documented requests quickly.

But documentation is not the same as testing. Use the docs to identify coverage ideas, then send requests in a REST client and compare actual responses with the documentation.

For Device Registry, that means using the OpenAPI file to identify paths and payload shapes, then deliberately varying the requests. Try missing required fields, unsupported methods, malformed bodies, and authentication failures. Good API testing starts from the documentation but does not stop there.

What This Update Adds for Learners

Adding Device Registry improved the practice-site list because it created a clear progression:

  • no-auth CRUD practice in Simple API,
  • authenticated CRUD practice in Device Registry,
  • larger application workflow practice in the full practice apps.

That progression matters because learners can add one new source of complexity at a time. First learn HTTP and REST basics, then learn CRUD state changes, then learn authentication, then bring in documentation and workflow coverage.
